“To spend too much time in studies is sloth; to use them too much for ornament is affectation; to make judgment wholly by their rules is the humor of a scholar."
Francis Bacon said that when we spend too much time in studying, it will make us sloth. Based on my understanding, that's because we avoid doing other things rather than studying. Example, we stay in school to avoid doing things at home. We should do what we’re ought to do. We should be doing chores at home but we make excuses. We study everyday but we don't notice that we have already forgotten the real world. Studying is good but too much makes it bad.
When we use them for ornament, some people became arrogant. They want to be praised. But instead of receiving praises, they receive bad comments of what character they have. We don’t need to be proud of what we know. We can share our knowledge but in a humble way.
To define things based purely by what one learns in books is humorous or stupid. Sometimes, people judge things according to what they've read. They judge life according to what it should be. Life doesn’t always depend on laws, theories, rules, etc. We can consider them, but life also depends in our own experiences. We should live our life happily. We should do what we love. But we should also remember to follow rules we know that can help our life be better.
